Today's Good Thing: Stradivarius

Time: 2:45 pm

Meeting: Ascot

The Daily Good Thing Result

STRADIVARIUS can be forgiven his disappointing performance in the Long Distance Cup over C&D last October because it came quick enough after his effort in the Arc on heavy ground. His success in the Gold Cup here last June was simply stunning, beating Nayef Road by 10 lengths before confirming the form at Goodwood, and, although he’ll have bigger targets than this later in the season, the admirable chestnut should be able to strike on his reappearance. Stag Horn and Ocean Wind are others to note.

STRADIVARIUS is the undoubted star of the British staying division and he goes very well fresh too so this outstanding 7-y-o is hard to look beyond on his return in a season where he bids to win the Ascot Gold Cup for a fourth time. Nayef Road took this event 12 months ago and appeals as the one to chase him home with improving duo Ocean Wind and Stag Horn set to fight it out for minor honours.

Today's Good Thing: Sir Gerhard

Time: 6:30 pm

Meeting: Punchestown

KILCRUIT can turn Cheltenham placings with Sir Gerhard and win. Sir Gerhard got the run of the Cheltenham Bumper, making all, with KILCRUIT getting caught flat-footed before staying on well to the line. As a result KILCRUIT might have underperformed slightly on the day and while a stronger pace will suit, the memory of his awesome Dublin Festival win is still fresh. Sir Gerhard is Patrick Mullins’ pick, having also shown brilliance in his career but KILCRUIT can turn the half-length deficit. The form of O’Toole’s impressive Fairyhouse win has taken a few knocks and while he looks a very capable type, faces a big step up in grade today. Lake Winnipesaukee took the wrong course when travelling well in front at Leopardstown 52 days ago but faces a much stiffer test today. Eric Bloodaxe was a smart type last season but is long absent. Ramillies is tried in a first-time tongue-tie and needs to improve while Jamie Codd, who has ridden 41 winners for Willie Mullins, is subbed today and rides Ardla, a good CD winner but well held at Listowel in September.
